King and Piece(s) vs. King End Game Challenge

These puzzles are a great way of familiarizing with how the pieces move and learning how to checkmate. (And they're fun!) Remember, to win the game you must know how to checkmate. The first three challenges frequently occur in games, while in the last two challenges an abnormally large number of knights and bishops have been added as not to make them too difficult.

Instructions: Pick one and click on the title. The game will open up in a separate window. (The first time may take a few seconds.) When the game finishes loading, you'll see a "Start (New Position)" button. Click the button to reset the board and start the game.

Challenge 1 - Two Rooks and King vs. King

Challenge 2 - Queen and King vs. King

Challenge 3 - Rook and King vs. King

Challenge 4 - Four Bishops and King vs. King

Challenge 5 - Four Knights and King vs. King

Extra Credit - even good tournament players may have trouble with these. But don't worry about it. Keep trying! (Hint: you have to force the opponent's king into a corner!)

Challenge 6 - Two Bishops and King vs. King (not too difficult)
Challange 7 - Bishop, Knight, and King vs. King (okay, this one's tough) (Additional Hint: you have to force the opponent's king into a corner with the same colored square as your bishop!)
