Hi. This month we have two puzzles for you, one of them pretty basic (or maybe not!) and the other one advanced. Look at the positions and find the best move on the boards. Answers at the bottom of the page if you really get stuck!

basic

Puzzle #1: White to move and mate in one.

advanced

Puzzle #2: White to move and mate in two. Look carefully at the queen-bishop battery and imagine what you could do if black's king were just one square further over to the right....

Puzzle Answers: #1: 1. Qa5# is checkmate, black's king cannot escape to b2 or b3 as white's king covers those two squares. This is a little more subtle than the average "in your face" checkmates of king and queen directly lined up next to one another against the other king. #2: White forces black's king into the corner at h8 with 1. Rh8+!!. Black must play 1... Kxh8 as he can't escape to f7 (white's queen covers f7). Now it's a simple matter for white to utilize the queen-bishop battery to play 2. Qh7#, which is checkmate.
