2007 Georgia K-8
Team Championships

Kid Chess™ is particularly happy for the chess teams of the 18 schools with which we are associated that qualified for and competed in the 2007 Georgia K-8 Team Championships.

imageStudents from East Side Elementary School in Cobb County became the 2007 Georgia Chess Championship Team for Primary Grades (K-3). The seven players on the team were Nathan Wu, Ilyusha Belegradek, Donian Chyong, William Zheng, Matthew O’Brien, Andy Chyong, and Mitchell Waldron.

This is the first time a Cobb County Public School has won the State Chess Championship. Kid Chess™ instructor Bella Belegradek, the team’s lead chess coach and mother of one of the players, said East Side sent “a team of strong and enthusiastic chess players, who approach the game thoughtfully and seriously. Good team spirit made the East Side kids unbeatable.”

This was one of strongest team championship tournaments in recent memory, and just qualifying to compete in it was a major accomplishment in and of itself.

Kid Chess™ congratulates all of the schools and students who participated.

CHESS PLAYER NEEDED: to play chess with a kind, elderly male resident at Elmcroft Assisted Living Care Facility. This would make an excellent community service project for a student/teen or a rewarding opportunity for an adult. The volunteer could visit most any day or time. My son visits twice a month, but the resident would like someone for the other weeks if possible. Please contact: Hayley Rosenthal at 770-642-4817 (evenings) or 678-525-9621 (after 2:30)

Chess Place Thursday Night Free Chess Club

Chess Place, located at 2501 East Piedmont Road, Suite 160, in East Cobb County, is the venue for serious chess in the Northwest Metro Atlanta area. Our mission is to reach out to and draw in the new and casual players who desire a positive first experience to keep them coming back. We do this by offering tournaments and club play in an attractive, clean, technologocally up-to-date, and inviting environment. We strive to make ourselves welcoming and inviting to the novice and casual player at the same time as offering a serious challenge to the experienced player.

Our weekly Thursday night club affords free play to adults and students alike, often with a Game/10-minutes 4-round swiss system tournament. Our layout allows us to accomodate the young or casual players in one area while allowing the advanced players and tournament players to enjoy a separate, quiet modern venue for their serious chess games.

Whether you enjoy the challenge of USCF-rated tournament play or prefer playing casually, Chess Place has what you want. For more information beyond what you find here, please call us at 770-575-5802 or email us at info@atlantachessplace.com. Chess Place is located at 2501 East Piedmont Road, Suite 160, just off of Sandy Plains Road in East Cobb County.

We look forward to greeting you at our next tournament or club night.
