If you like the Kid Chess™ "Fun With Chess" afterschool program, you will LOVE the Kid Chess™ Summer Camps!
Just because the summer is here and school is out doesn't mean you have to stop playing chess.
As a matter of fact, we have found that kids who continue to play chess through the summer have a leg-up on the rest of the class when chess resumes in the fall.
Our June 5th-9th camp was a great success but if you missed it, don't feel like you've lost out on your chance to get into chess camp. We still have three more camps coming up, the next one beginning on June 26th at Chess Place in East Cobb County.
Learn How to WIN: With the large amount of instruction offered, campers can improve their chess skills dramatically in just one week.
Have Lots of Fun: Camps feature a variety of activities which include: Regular Chess, Bughouse Chess, Blitz Chess, Blindfolded Chess, & Obstacle courses. Several chances to play top instructors, lots of play.
Win Trophies: Every camper wins at least one trophy with the opportunity to win several more. Each camper gets a T-shirt and a Scorepad.
Camp Dates Are :
June 26th-30th and July 24th-28th at Chess Place (East Cobb County),
July 17th-21st, at Findley Oaks Elementary (North Fulton / Alpharetta)

Excellent schools have an Excellent Chess Program. Yours should, too. |
Playing chess has proven to help students enhance their creativity, improve their power of concentration, develop and expand critical thinking skills, boost memory and retention, and achieve superior academic performance. Additionally, chess has been shown to augment problem-solving capabilities, provide cultural enrichment, advance intellectual maturity, and enhance self-esteem. We know that these are qualities that school administrators, parents, and teachers desire for their students.
Our Kid Chess™ "Fun With Chess" program features:
- Classes professionally taught at the school campus,
- At least 1 trophy for each participant,
- tournaments with many Trophies,
- "Bughouse Chess", which is a four-player version of of the game that teaches teamwork and social interaction,
- computer-aided instruction,
and many other ways to learn and enjoy this great game. We provide instruction for all levels and ages, from those that do not know how to play on up to champions.

One of the surest ways of improving your game in chess is to play long, slow games against tough opponents. That way, you have time to consider each of your moves in a careful, unhurried manner and at the same time see how a better player responds and plays the game. The easiest way to find the opportunity to play serious games like this is to play in one or both of the upcoming Chess Place Rated Tournaments coming up on June 24th and July 15th.
Chess Place Rated Tournaments are 4-round events (you play 4 games), which will be rated by the U.S. Chess Federation. They are presented in two sections.
The Under-1200 section is intended for chess players new to rated play. This will give you the chance to see what rated tournaments are like, give you the opportunity to play long slow games, and still compete against similarly-skilled players. When we say "Under 1200", by the way, we mean players who have a US Chess Federation rating that is less than 1200 or players new to rated play who have no rating at all.
The other section is our Open Section. Anyone may enter and play in the Open Section, even unrated players, but this section is really intended for the experienced tournament player. When you enter the Open section of any tournament, you can expect to play against high-rated players which can include some of the best rated competitors in the state.
The entry fee for either section is $25 in advance, or $30 if you register and pay on the day of the tournament. You must also be a US Chess Federation (abbreviated as "USCF") member. If you're not a USCF member, you can join at Chess Place on the day of the tournament when you check in.

The Games are played with chess clocks, and the time control is Game/45, that is, each player must complete his or her game in 45 minutes. Prizes (Guaranteed, NOT based on entries) are different depending on which section you choose: Open Section: 1st Place- $100, 2nd Place- $50, 3rd Place- $25, trophies for Top Juniors. Under 1200 Section: Trophies to Top 5 finishers and to all players who finish with a plus score (2.5 or higher). Winners have the option of receiving merchandise in lieu of trophy.
Registration closes at 9:45 a.m. on the day of the tournament. Rounds will be at 10 a.m., 11:45 a.m., 200 p.m., 3:45 p.m.
For more information, or if you have questions or would like to register, call us at 770-575-5802 -OR- register online at www.kidchess.com.

Kid Chess™ Puzzles |
Here are this month's Kid Chess™ Puzzles. These two related problems are based on a checkmating tactic called "Blackburne's Mate". The one on the left is a simple checkmate in one move for white and shows the power of a pair of bishops. The one on the right is a more difficult checkmate in TWO moves for white. Work the first problem and then use what you learn to solve the more-difficult second puzzle. Solving chess tactics puzzles like these can improve your chess! (If you get lost, the answers may be found below the board diagrams.) |
