Kid Chess Will Be At The National K-12

id Chess instructors will be available at the National K-12 Scholastic championships this December 13-15 at the Downtown Atlanta Hilton, 255 Courtland St. Several Kid Chess instructors, including state co-champions FIDE Master Stephen Muhammad and International Master Carlos Perdomo, will be available to analyze games and offer advice after your game is over.

For the last few months, we’ve been counting down to the Nationals, the first national championship to be held in Atlanta since the National High School championship in 1991. Now it is only days away. It is not too late to register; in fact, you can even register at the tournament site. The cost is $70 and you can register online at www.uschess.org.

Chess Essentials
Tactics Corner

here are hundreds if not thousands of terms in chess. Fortunately, you don’t have to know them all to play good chess. There are certain terms that you will hear over and over again though, and these you should know. This is especially true when it comes to pawns. Andre Philidor (1725-1795) famously said, “Pawns are the soul of chess.” What this means is that almost everything that happens on the chessboard is the result of pawn structure.

This month’s Chess Essentials takes the form of a quiz:

See how much you already know about pawn terms. In the above position, identify the following:

  1. Passed pawn

  2. Isolated pawn

  3. Isolani

  4. Doubled pawns

  5. Pawn chain

  6. Backward pawn

In the above position, identify the following:

  1.  Pawn majority

actics in chess often resemble a boxing match. One fighter throws a punch thinking it is a knockout blow only to be felled himself by a well-timed counter punch. When you are considering a tactical blow, you must make sure that your opponent does not have a counter-tactic that ends up costing you the game. Seldom will your opponent meekly accept your plans.

In the following position, Black certainly must have considered what appears to be a good tactical shot, 12...Rxh4, followed by 13. Nxh4 Qxh4+. Black saw, however, that White had a good counterpunch instead of the meek 13. Nxh4. What is White’s best move if Black were to play 12...Rxh4? There are actually three good possibilities, all easy to miss if you are playing Black and don’t look deeply enough.

Tactics Corner Solutions

13. Bg5 and 13.Bc8 are both good, but 13. Nxe4 gives White his best chances.

Click here to view the whole game, which ends with a pretty knight move. See if you can guess White’s 19th and 20th moves before you play them.

Chess Essentials Solutions
  1. The a5 pawn is a passed pawn, meaning no enemy pawn can block it or capture it.

  2. The f5 pawn is an isolated pawn. It stands by itself with no pawn of the same color on either adjoining file.

  3. The d4 pawn is an isolani, which is an isolated pawn on the d-file. This type of pawn is a common result of a number of different openings.

  4. The h3 and h4 pawns are doubled. These are two pawns that share the same file. In rare cases, tripled pawns can appear.

  5. The d7, c6, and b5 pawns form a pawn chain.

  6. The f3 pawn is backward, meaning it cannot be guarded by a pawn of its own color.

  7. The a2, b2, and c3 pawns form a pawn majority over the opposing black pawns because they outnumber them 3 to 2, and the f7, g7, and h7 pawns form a majority over their white counterparts.
