Georgia Students at the
Super Nationals III! |
(CROSSVILLE, TN) Once again, Georgia’s scholastic chess community made the chess world take notice, this time at the world’s largest scholastic chess tournament. SuperNationals III attracted a record 5230 children in Nashville, TN, the weekend of April 8-10. Students from 1300 schools in 48 states representing over 600 cities gathered at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center – the largest non-casino hotel in the U.S. - for 4 days of intense competition with pride, trophies, and scholarships on the line.
Xiao Cheng of Chattahoochee High School in Alpharetta and Kazim Gulamali of Forest Park tied with seven others for the high school championship, with 9th grader Xiao taking top honors based on tie breaks. His win is worth $48,000 to young Mr. Cheng – this is the value of the scholarship he wins from the University of Texas at Dallas as the 2005 High School Champion. Mr. Gulamali is the current 11th grade national champion, a title earned at the National K-12 Championships, held in Orlando in December.
In the K-1st Grade Championship Section, Daniel Gurevich, a home schooled 1st grader from Marietta, won the national championship to complement his 1st grade national championship, achieved in December.
Other top performing Georgians include: In the high school section, Benjamin Francis, a 9th grade home schooler in Atlanta, was only a draw away from being in the large first place group, giving him a tie for 10th place. His sister, 6th grader Emily, tied for 16th place in the K-6th section. Boris Xu of Duluth, the current state elementary champion, tied for 12th in the K-5th section. The Pace Academy team from Buckhead won the national blitz championship in the K-6th section.
The 5230 students smashed the old record of 4606 entries recorded in Kansas City in 2001. National scholastic tournaments are held each year but are divided by location into elementary, middle school, and high school events. Every four years all three are gathered at one site for a “Super” National. The 2005 event is the third such event organized by the United States Chess Federation, the governing body for chess in the United States, located in Crossville, TN. Here are Georgia’s top performers: |

Kid Chess Students
Shine in Orlando! |
eorgia’s scholastic players did extraordinarily well at the National K12 Championships, held December 10-12 at the Walt Disney World Dolphin Hotel and Resort, and we’re proud to say that a number of Kid Chess students were included. National Championships were won by Daniel Gurevich (1st Grade), Paul Taylor (3rd Grade), and Kazim Gulamali (11th Grade, Blitz, and Bughouse with William Stewart).
In team competition, PACE Academy’s 3rd Grade Team won third place in the K^ Blitz section. Congratulations go to team members Michael Christianson, Ryan Christianson, and Jeremy Paul.
To see complete results from the event, please visit the USCF website at:
